KBI 220009 CPU Spiking In Performance Monitor
Version
All Windows 4.0
Date
1 Jul 1999
Summary
NT Performance Monitor instances of Processor Utilization can spike to 100% at random intervals.
Task Manager, on the other hand, shows no CPU spikes, or valid spikes that are not coincident with the data displayed by Performance Monitor.
This causes the Argent Guardian Performance Rules to break when no real CPU issue exists.
Technical Background
- If Computer Associate’s Innoculan’s real-time antivirus service is running, stopping the service will likely eliminate the spiking.
- If the machine is not specifically supported in the Microsoft Hardware Compatibility List (HCL), upgrading to the newest service pack should eliminate the spiking.
Custom-built, non-OEM machines, or machines with hardware upgrades not supported by an older service pack are the probable candidates.
This is an NT issue, not an Argent issue.
