KBI 220222 Making Outlook The Default MAPI Client
Version
All
Date
21 May 2004
Summary
If Microsoft Outlook is installed, but is not the default mail client, the user may receive “Cannot log into MAPI with provided profile name and password” messages.
Technical Background
When Outlook is installed and opened for the first time, the user is prompted to make Outlook the default client for email.
If the user selects “No” and the “Don’t ask me this again” box is checked, there is no obvious way to make Outlook prompt the user again.
If the user is configuring Argent to use MAPI to send email, the profiles should show up in the Profile Name drop-down in the Main Engine Email tab.
However, if Outlook is not configured to be the default mail client, no profiles are available.
Manually entering the information and clicking the Send Test Message button results in:
“Cannot log into MAPI with provided profile name and password.”
Resolution
To allow Outlook to prompt the user to make it the default mail client:
- Open a Command Prompt.
- Change directories to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office
- Type:
outlook.exe /checkclient
- Select “Yes” when prompted to make Outlook the default mail client.
- Close Outlook.
Reopen the Argent GUI and select the appropriate MAPI profile from the Main Engine Email tab.
