Q664.

The command line backup utility — surprisingly called ‘ArgentBackup‘ — makes it easy for you to backup all the essential Argent files.

The files includes the following:

  • Rule Definitions
  • Alert Definitions
  • Monitored Node Definitions
  • Relator Definitions
  • Calendar Definitions
  • Report Definitions

The command line backup utility will not backup event list, historical data or Argent Predictor data because Argent Predictor data is the raw capacity planning and trend analysis data points and can run to hundreds of gigabytes and is best backed up directly on the database backend server.

The command line backup utility is installed in the ArgentManagementConsole directory.

xtb Optional backup file name

Example

Here’s an example. To backup the Argent Guardian, use:

ArgentBackup /ArgentGuardian

Complex, right?

The following screen shows the control data successfully backed up for the Argent Guardian:

Using Custom Filename

To send the back data for just one product to a specific filename, just specify it, as shown below:

ArgentBackup /ArgentGuardian customfile

The following screenshot shows the control data of Argent SQL Monitor backed up to the file ‘SQL.xtb‘.

You cannot specify an explicit file name when backing up two or more products.

If a backup file name is not specified, the Argent Console backup file is created under:

drive:\ARGENT\ARGENT_BACKUP\ArgentAlertConsole\AAC_DATE_TIMESTAMP.XTB

The Argent Guardian backup file is created under:

drive:\ARGENT:\ARGENT_BACKUP\ArgentGuardian\AG_DATE_TIMESTAMP.XTB

Other backup files can be found under their respective directories.

If you try to backup an Argent product that is not installed, you simply get an error message, as you can see:

Backing Up Multiple Products

You can backup multiple products – just specify the parameters.

ArgentBackup /ArgentConsole /ArgentGuardian /ArgentSentry

If any of the products specified in the command is not installed on the machine, the command line backup program will skip over that program and continue with the other products.

In the following screenshot, the backup program skipped over the Argent SNMP Monitor.

When using the command line backup utility to backup multiple Argent Products, the utility will automatically assign file names for the backup files for you.

If you try to backup multiple products and specify a custom file name, the following error message will appear:

Could not use one backup file for multiple XT products. Let backup program automatically assigns the backup files, or backup product data individually.

So how long will this take?

Good question.

Argent installs over 2,500 predefined Rules and Relators. This means a production installation should generally be backed up in a few minutes.

Backups are wonderful, but they are useless if you cannot restore the data.

The backup file created using the command line backup utility can be restored when necessary from the main GUI of the Argent products.

If a backup file name is not specified, the Argent Console backup file is created under:

drive:\ARGENT\ARGENT_BACKUP\ArgentAlertConsole\AAC_DATE_TIMESTAMP.XTB

The Argent Guardian backup file is created under

drive:\ARGENT:\ARGENT_BACKUP\ArgentGuardian\AG_DATE_TIMESTAMP.XTB

Other backup files can be found under their respective directories.

The GUI Restore looks for the backup files in these same directories.
