Mother/Daughter And Network Firewalls

The Mother engine is a TCP server listening on a specific port. Daughters initiate TCP communications to the Mother.

The port used is controlled by the registry:

HKLM\Software\Argent\{PRODUCT}\MOTHER_PORT.

For example, Argent Guardian Ultra uses port 6700.

Sometimes it is difficult to remember which port is used.

The easiest to find out is to read the product service log at the Mother Engine.

Search for the line ‘starts listening at port xxxx‘.

Take Argent Guardian Ultra, for example, at the Mother Engine site, the firewall should be configured to allow incoming traffic to port 6700 of the Mother Engine; at the Daughter Engine side, the firewall should be configured to allow outgoing traffic to port 6700 of the Mother Engine.

Of course, customers can edit the registry to use a different port if necessary.
