KBI 311474 New Feature: Support SMTP And POP3 Servers Using TLS And SSL Protocols
Version
Argent Advanced Technology 5.1A-1610-A and later
Date

Summary
Most ISPs (Internet Service Provider) provide SMTP and POP3 services supporting SSL/TLS protocols only
The typical examples include Gmail and Yahoo
Argent AT 5.1A-1610-A has been enhanced to support such protocols
Besides the typical mail server address and logon credentials, the mail port and SSL start mode are the two parameters specific for TLS and SSL mail services
SSL start mode for SMTP and POP3 can take following values:
- Automatic – If the remote port is set to the standard plaintext port of the protocol (where applicable), the component will behave the same as explicit
In all other cases, SSL negotiation will be implicit
The SSL negotiation will start immediately after the connection is established
- Implicit – The SSL negotiation will start immediately after the connection is established
- Explicit – The component will first connect in plaintext, and then explicitly start SSL negotiation through a protocol command such as STARTTLS
- No SSL – No SSL negotiation, no SSL security
All communication will be in plain text mode
For example, Gmail and Yahoo use ‘Automatic’ as SSL start mode for both SMTP and POPS, port 465 for SMTP and 995 for POP3
