KBI 311806 Issue Addressed: Unable To Use A Password Longer Than 30 Characters In Email Configuration

Version

Argent Advanced Technology 5.1A-2001-A and below

Date

Wednesday, 15 April 2020

Summary

Users cannot use a password longer than 30 characters in the Email configuration of the Argent Console Engine settings

The issue has been addressed in Argent Advanced Technology 5.1A-2004-A

The maximum length of the email password is increased to 60 characters

Technical Background

Passwords are stored encrypted in the registry or database

In Argent Advanced Technology 5.1A-2001-A and earlier, 128 bytes are allocated to store the encrypted password

Each character in the password needs 4 bytes to store in encrypted form

Including overhead, the maximum length of the password is limited to 30 characters

The ODBC database can store password data up to 256 characters due to an MFC library limit

Argent Advanced Technology has been enhanced so that passwords with up to 60 characters can be stored

If there is a need to store passwords even longer than that, contact Argent Tech Support

Resolution

Upgrade to Argent Advanced Technology 5.1A-2004-A or above
