Summary

Coexistence Of Argent Data Consolidator Trap Rules And Argent SNMP Trap Monitor

Technical Background

The Argent Data Consolidator has the ability to consolidate SNMP traps and the Argent SNMP Monitor can monitor and alert on specific SNMP Traps being received by the server. The Argent services bind onto the relevant UDP ports to provide this functionality.

There may be times when functionality provided by both products is needed, i.e. All (or specific) SNMP traps need to be archived by the Argent Data Consolidator and the Argent SNMP Monitor sends alerts when specific traps are received.

Since only one windows process can bind itself and listen to a port, there may be certain technical challenges in achieving this.

The Resolution section discusses various ways in which functionality from both products can be achieved simultaneously.

Argent products support all 3 versions of SNMP using the following libraries:

SNMP v1: Windows SNMP Library
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Argent\ArgentManagementConsole\SNMP_Library = 0)

SNMP v2: DART Library
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Argent\ArgentManagementConsole\SNMP_Library = 1)

SNMP v3: SNMP Library
(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Argent\ArgentManagementConsole\SNMP_Library = 2)

Resolution

Windows Library – SNMP v1:

The Argent products can simultaneously use the Windows SNMP Library to consolidate SNMP traps through the Argent Data Consolidator and also alert on traps through the Argent SNMP Monitor. Therefore the Argent Data Consolidator Transfer Engine and the Argent SNMP Monitor Monitoring Engine can co-exist on the same machine and provide their respective functionality without implementing any workarounds.

DART & SNMP Library – SNMP v2 & SNMP v3:

Co-existence of consolidation and Monitoring Engines is not possible using the DART and SNMP libraries. A practical way to implement this is to implement a separate machine as the Argent Data Consolidator Transfer Engine (Trap Consolidator) or Argent SNMP Monitor Monitoring Engine (Trap Monitor).

Configure your SNMP devices to forward traps to both, the main Argent server and the additional machine deployed as the “Trap Consolidator” or the “Trap Monitor“.
