Summary

Newly implemented Device Discovery Rule can scan specified IP range and discover SNMP devices that are not defined in CMDB-X

The Rule can do following for newly discovered devices:

1. Add to a specific Network Group in CMDB-X
2. Automatically license newly discovered devices
3. Fire Alerts on newly discovered devices

Technical Background

Device Discovery Rule should be used in Relator to run SNMP network scanning in scheduled time and Alert on new devices accordingly

Compared to other Rules, which is about condition of target machine, this Device Discovery Rule is to find new devices in the network

So the server/devices in Relator are not important

No matter how many times to run the scanning, the same result should be returned

To be efficient, it is better to use a Monitoring Group that contains just one server/device

If the option ‘License Newly Discovered SNMP Devices’ is used, the new found devices are licensed automatically

Use this option only if installed license has enough or unlimited IP device count

By using ODBC query based Monitoring Group, such as &MG_SNMP_DEVICE, in Relator, automatic monitoring can be achieved

For example, when Rule ‘DNW_AUTO_LICENSE_NEW_DEVICES’ is executed, new devices A, B and C are discovered

Device A, B and C are added to CMDB-X and licensed in Argent for SNMP

As a result, &MG_SNMP_DEVICE includes device A, B and C now

The Relator using this Monitoring Group will start monitoring device A, B and C

Upgrade to Argent Advanced Technology 5.1A-1807-A or above
