KBI 312140: Issue Addressed: Access Denied When Browsing Windows Services

Version

Argent Omega 2.2A-2310-A or earlier

Date

Friday, 22 December 2023

Summary

When defining a Windows Service Rule, users might use ‘Browse Computer’ option to select one or multiple Windows Services from the list. However, users might encounter ‘Access Denied’ error when doing so.

The feature has been implemented in Argent Omega 2.2A-2401-A.

Technical Background

In Argent Omega 2.2A-2310-A or earlier, WMI is the mechanism to retrieve Windows service list from remote machine. When remote access of WMI is blocked for service account, error ‘Access Denied’ happens.

Argent Omega 2.2A-2401-A is enhanced with additional methods Windows Native and PowerShell Remoting. Windows Native method is the same as connecting to remote machine in Service Control Manager (SCM). It generally works if service account is a local Administrator at the target machine.

Resolution

Upgrade to Argent Omega 2.2.2401-A or later.
For users who could not upgrade immediately, WMI security changes are necessary for browsing Windows Service. The other workaround is to use option Manual to enter service name and display name manually.
