KBI 220327 SMTP Error 503 When Testing Outbound Email

Version

All

Date

11 Nov 2004

Summary

Occasionally a user may get an error “SMTP ERROR 503 : BAD SEQUENCE OF COMMANDS” or “SMTP ERROR 503 : COMMAND REJECTED”.

Technical Background

The cause of this message is almost always due to the SENDER EMAIL ADDRESS not being resolvable.

Open relays and other SMTP servers will not NORMALLY exhibit this behavior, but if a Customer has any type of

filtering or custom SPAM blockers, this error may be encountered.

Resolution

Be sure the Customer understands this is NOT an ARGENT Issue.

You can duplicate the issue using another email client.

Normally, this can be addressed by changing from MIME to UUENCODE.
