KBI 311795 Unable to Install Microsoft VC++ 2015 Redistributable
Version
All Microsoft OS Versions
Date
Friday, 7 February 2020
Summary
This KBI describes the issue of being unable to install Microsoft VC++ 2015 Redistributable, which is a prerequisite for Argent Advanced Technology beginning with version 5.1A-1601-A.
Technical Background
Microsoft released Visual Studio 2019 on Tue, 2 Apr 2019.
The Microsoft VC++ 2019 runtime library is available in Microsoft VC++ Redistributable 2015-2019, shown below.
Microsoft claims the VC++ 2017 and 2019 runtime libraries are backward compatible.
Warning:
- Installing the Microsoft VC++ 2017 Redistributable or later versions will automatically uninstall Microsoft VC++ 2015 Redistributable.
- Microsoft VC++ 2015 Redistributable cannot be installed if Microsoft VC++ 2017 or 2019 Redistributable is installed.
- The Argent AT setup process validates the presence of the Microsoft VC++ 2015 Redistributable.
New customers or those installing new Argent deployments may encounter an issue related to the Microsoft VC++ 2015 redistributable installation due to the above reasons.
This is a known Microsoft issue.
For customers who already have Argent AT installed, Argent services seem unaffected even though the customer may have unknowingly patched Microsoft VC++ runtime library to a higher version.
However, FEs should pay extra attention during health checks.
Resolution
Customers are recommended to work with Microsoft VC++ 2015 Redistributable for now.
Customers can manually uninstall Microsoft VC++ 2017 or above first and then install Microsoft VC++ 2015 to continue the Argent AT installation.
Argent Development will confirm support of the all-in-one Microsoft VC++ 2015-2019 redistributable shortly.
