KBI 311183 Issue Addressed: Servers In Hawaii, Arizona Are Monitored One Hour Ahead Of Schedule When Daylight Saving Time Is In Effect

Version

Argent Advanced Technology 3.1A-1501-C and earlier

Date

Wednesday, 25 March 2015

Summary

Argent AT Relator can be configured to schedule monitoring task using local time zone setting of monitored server/devices

The maintenance schedule of licensed Node also has the similar setting

When Daylight Saving Time (DST) is currently in effect, if Argent AT Supervising Engine is installed in states observing DST, while the monitored server/device is in one of the regions does not observe DST and uses Time Zone option ‘Fixed Hours’, the related monitoring tasks will start one hour early

The issue has been addressed in Argent AT 3.1A-1501-T4 or later

A new CMDB-X Node property has been added to allow enabling or disabling DST

The default value is ‘enabled’

For the server/device in the regions not using DST, the DST can be disabled explicitly for the Node

Technical Background

The issue was caused by the assumption that all servers observe DST in the same way as Main Engine

Though it is true for almost all cases, it is not so when network is very distributed

As of 2015 the following states and territories are not observing DST:

  • Arizona
  • Hawaii
  • American Samoa
  • Puerto Rico
  • US Virgin Islands

If some server/devices are in these regions, while Argent AT Engine in other regions, the scheduling can be one hour off

Resolution

Upgrade to Argent AT 3.1A-1501-T4 or later

If customer cannot upgrade immediately, do one of the following two action:

  • Use Time Zone Option ‘Dynamic Read From Server’ instead of ‘Fixed Hours’
  • OR

  • Install a Daughter Engine on the site not using DST
